Serial Acquirers Market Update: Canadian Tech Growth Takes the Lead and the Newcomers to Canadian M&A
Intact Insurance’s Venture Arm Makes First Company Acquisition and how the West Coast and AI are Spearheading Canada’s Tech Growth
Canadian Insurance Giant Joins the Acquisition Space
Intact Financial, a major player in the Canadian insurance industry, recently acquired Toronto-based home maintenance startup Jiffy. This acquisition marks a significant milestone as it is the first time Intact Ventures, the investment arm of Intact, extended its mandate to include mergers and acquisitions.
Jiffy, known for its rapid response times, has completed over 450,000 jobs to date. The acquisition aims to expand Jiffy’s reach to more Canadians, enhancing Intact’s presence in the home maintenance market.
I believe this is a positive for both sides as the acquisition not only strengthens Intact’s service offerings but also supports Jiffy’s mission to provide accessible and reliable solutions to more Canadians. It is interesting to see a player like Intact getting into the M&A market, and I am excited to see where their venture team invests next.
Canada's Tech Ecosystem: A Rising Global Leader
Last week at SaaS North in Ottawa, Inovia CEO Chris Arsenault presented Inovia’s “State of Canadian Software” report. Chris spoke about how Canada's tech sector is experiencing a significant surge, outpacing the U.S. with a 15.7% growth in the tech workforce since 2020. A point brought up by Chris that excited me was the talk about how Western Canada is becoming a region of strong momentum, particularly Vancouver and Calgary, with the region seeing over $23 billion invested since 2019.
The presentation is an interesting read as it emphasizes the importance of empowering Canadian founders and the importance of locally built AI-native platforms and applications, which are attracting the most attention as of late.
The three major technology shifts highlighted on the global stage: generative AI, quantum computing, and nuclear fusion are keen for growth and investment, and I cannot wait to see what comes out of the innovation-focused Canadian hubs we have created. With the focus on sustainable growth and innovation, I believe Canada is well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the current technology shifts and become a true leader in the tech world.
