Serial Acquirers Market Update: VC Funding for BC Startups and Canadian SaaS Goes Worldwide
Brightspark Ventures, a Montréal-based firm, recently closed its latest fund with over $100 million CAD in commitments. The fund held its final close last month and aims to invest in early-stage tech startups based in British Columbia, focusing on early and seed round funding. The firm plans to build a portfolio of 12 to 18 companies through the new fund and has already invested in two startups focused on carbon removal and robotics.
As one of Canada's longest-standing VC firms, Brightspark remains optimistic about portfolio performance and plans to continue investing in ambitious startups. With the current downturn in funding, these investments can hopefully be a great “spark” for the investment space.
Canadian SaaS Gets a Boost
Nuvei recently announced a partnership with BigCommerce, a leading open SaaS and composable ecommerce platform based in the US. This cross-border partnership aims to bring Nuvei's solutions to BigCommerce customers in North America, Europe, and Asia. The collaboration is exciting for Canadian tech companies, as it allows BigCommerce users to access Nuvei's comprehensive suite of omnichannel payment, which streamline payment processing by bridging online and in-store experiences. This partnership gives startups looking to share their product with the global SaaS market the push to keep moving forward.

We’ve seen this effect recently, with the “Magnificent 7” driving more than half of the gains of the S&P 500 in 2023, and only three companies accounting for half of the index’s total gains in the first half of 2024. Take a read to learn why investors need to be more selective when choosing which stocks to buy.
